A Biedermeier residence, full of creative spaces
A HOUSE THROUGH THE AGES
After previous extensive structural interventions significantly changed the appearance of the house towards Nußdorfer Straße, for example by adding a generous display or repositioning the entrances, the current renovation aims to preserve the historical building structure as well as a qualitative expansion in the spirit of monument protection.
The construction task includes a complete revitalization of a glacis Biedermeier house worthy of protection. The focus here is on protecting the historic walls and walkways as well as preserving the existing greenery in the hidden inner courtyard.
The character of the associated Biedermeier living arrangements should also be preserved: the entire planning and implementation will be carried out by the architectural firm BFA X KLK.
history of the house
The Biedermeier house with the main and courtyard wings as well as side wings was built around a newly created inner courtyard in 1822, incorporating the foundation walls of the previous buildings.
The furnishing of the living rooms with box windows or double external doors, many of which are still preserved, was probably only done later in the second half of the 19th century.
Until 1908, there were still four windows on the ground floor of the main wing south of the entrance, when the shop of the canvas dealer Wilhelmine Gams was expanded and a corresponding portal with displays was approved.
The main characteristic of Biedermeier architecture is the elegant but rather simple style, although it was ultimately a variant of classicism. This style influenced the monumental buildings of this time, and Biedermeier influenced the bourgeois residential areas. The focus of the Biedermeier era was not on thinking or acting, but on experiencing and creating from nature.
